News Digital Economy

April 2010 The Digital Economy Bill looks set to be law now after passing the final consideration of amendments in the House of Lords today. The Bill, which was quite literally rushed through at the 11th hour, is wrong in so many ways. It poses serious issues for human rights. It may spell the end for any public service free wifi internet access. It creates arbitrary blocking of internet locations for the vaguest of reasons creating a China style firewall around the UK.

Now we see the final amended Act we have had a chance to work through it bit by bit and assess the implications. We have no intention of blocking any internet locations or restricting or disconnecting any customers. Obviously we have to follow the letter of the law, but we fully expect the Act to be unworkable against any concerted opposition. That is before considering EU Human Rights objections to some of the Act.
